Professor Layton and the Last Specter for Nintendo DS finally arrived after a long anticipated wait.This is the 4th edition of the series and is actually the beginning.For those who enjoy puzzles and brain teasers this edition will get your pulse racing.You will have endless hours of fun.The Last Specter follows the same gameplay as the last three.There are no new features or fantastic upgrades, but the storyline is polished and the sequence is perfect.Layton is much younger in this episode and he is tasked with investigating a series of crimes committed by a specter.The name of the town where all this takes place is called Misthallery.Emmy and Luke are another two characters that assist Layton.The specter has the ability to wreak havoc on the inhabitants of the town if not stopped.In this episode Layton and Luke meet for the first time and this gives fans a beautiful account of how their friendship began.The method Layton takes to solve the mystery is quite impressive and the game proceeds logically.There is a lot of deep thinking involved and players must tax their brains to the limit in order to solve the mystery.The storyline is well rounded and the developers should be commended for such a brilliant piece of artwork.The graphics, although presented as cartoon artwork is quite impressive.The scenes are magnificent and the characters are beautifully crafted with a delightful personality.The danger in the game almost seems real.The sound has been specially designed to haunt your dreams long after the game has been played.The story and music have been paired to give the ultimate feeling of mystery throughout the adventure.Although very similar to the previous games, this one seems to be the best.There are about 200 puzzles to solve.A few of them are similar to those in the predecessor, but there are plenty of new ones you have not encountered before.The game does provide hints and clues along the way, so no one can claim the puzzles were too difficult to solve.There are also hidden puzzles and coins which will unlock hidden levels if you find them.The game provides a lot of environments to explore with a rich content of new puzzles and faces.Layton can be upgraded and his personality and character improved to make him the best detective you have ever encountered.The game is rather long and can take days to finish.Prepare yourself to enter Layton's world for quite some time.Nintendo DS owners should jump at the opportunity to include this game in their collection.This is definitely the best Layton game in the series.

Marshall Frank implicitly inquires in the suspense novel that bears the name (and words) of that question.Of course the answer to that query depends upon a person's perspective.Or, in the words of Leonard Cohen's ironic narrator. "Whatever makes a soldier sad will make a killer smile." Which is to say, in a world where the order of "right and wrong" is often subverted or suspended by those operating with a completely different (and often diabolical) morality in mind, this question becomes somewhat problematic.In the novel The Upside To Murder we are thrust into just such a world. one where we wonder about the nature of justice and murder, as we ask ourselves, in the terms of a biblical phrase, is there a time to kill?Doctor Orville Madison has been struck with an abysmal strain of Dj vu.As a young man his sister Paula was raped by a group of men.Instead of receiving justice, the individuals who committed this heinous crime were acquitted, while his sister was charged with Assault With Intent to Commit Murder for using a firearm to defend herself.Accused of being a perjurer and a "common slut," Paula was subjected to a humiliating courtroom experience.After the horrific trial, wherein she suffered public disgrace, this young lady (with every reason to live) took her own life.Now, as an older man, Orville finds himself in nearly an identical nightmare. as his sixteen year old daughter, Cassandra Madison, an honor student and a devout Catholic, has been raped by a couple of thugs; and he is being asked to trust the same legal system that helped destroy his sister's life.However, Orville is not prepared to let the re-emergence of this traumatic set of circumstances ruin his family for a second time.Realizing the "system that purports to seek justice" may be "more damaging to the victim than the crime itself," Orville wonders, "Where's the priority?" Lee Child is a British writer with a background in television.His first book in the Jack Reacher series is The Killing Floor, which came out in 1997.His series and the Reacher character are very popular.His sixteenth book The Affair explores the character's life before he left the military, so there is no need to start at the beginning.The Killing Floor begins with wanderer Jack Reacher, who is arrested in a small town in Georgia.Right off the bus he is accused of murder, but there is something very fishy about the town.It is a little too perfect.Reacher has just retired as a military cop, so he knows how to be patient until his alibi clears.He befriends two of the police and proceeds to clean up the town.If you like vigilantes and violence doesn't bother you, then this is your kind of book.I read Persuader, the seventh book in the series, first, before going back to the beginning and reached the same conclusion.The main character ends up killing more people than the bad guys, and he seems to be able to do it without any repercussions.It left me wondering what I was missing.For the most part it is difficult for me to relate to his character, which is why I read a series.I found him a little flat.The information about the currency system was interesting.And the writing was fast-paced.I thought the African-American chief of detectives (Finlay) was a little slow for someone who had spent his career as a Boston detective.It's not just the violence.The first few books of the Barry Eisler series about a hit man in Japan were excellent.And although John Sandford's Lucas Davenport is also violent, he has mellowed with age, and you enjoy bits of humor in the stories.He doesn't take his character too seriously.So, like many cozies on the other end of the spectrum, which I find manipulative in their busybody characters, I guess I find the violence and hard-core actions of this super hero also manipulative and hard to digest.But unlike the cozies, this book took a lot more talent and research to stitch together.One big plus is Reacher is a Blues fan.The reason he comes to the town of Margrave is to find out more about an old blues singer.Anyone, fictional or real, who is a fan of the Blues, deserves kudos in my book.It just isn't quite enough to get me to read another selection in the series, however.

Fueled by guilt over their lack of communication, she becomes a persistent and effective detective.Historians believe that rheumatic fever caused Mozart's death.Mozart's Last Aria tells us that Mozart believed he was poisoned weeks before he died.Whatever Freemason directive he tried to promote may have been the cause of his death.Nannerl stops at nothing to find his killer.She may have lived in the 18th century, but she functions like a contemporary CSI investigator.Mozart's Last Aria will certainly capture the attention of music lovers, but its real draw will be enthusiasts of historical mystery.It is reminiscent of Mistress of the Art of Death by Arianna Franklin moved forward several centuries and minus the gore.The ending is a bit far-fetched and the book seems a platform for the author to parade his musical knowledge, but all in all the book is a fun romp.Recommended especially for music lovers.

In its third season, cult favorite "Forever Knight" continues a fine tradition of excellent, even thought-provoking storytelling while concluding the saga of Nick Knight, 13th Century vampire and 20th Century Toronto homicide detective.
In the opening double episode of the season, "Black Buddha", a deranged bomber destroys an airliner leaving Toronto, precipitating a major shakeup in the cast of "Forever Knight." Knight's partner and his precinct captain are killed in the crash. Knight's new partner is Tracy Vetter, an inexperienced and often impulsive detective whose father happens to be police commissioner. Her arrival allows an interesting plot twist. Tracy falls in love with the boyishly charming vampire Vashon, but remains unaware that Nick is also a vampire, leading to a series of humorously ironic situations, notably in the episode "My Boyfriend is a Vampire.".

This is the third and sadly, final season for the series. Nick's life in Toronto is beginning to end as the series opens. In the first episode both his partner and boss are replaced and not for the better. In the vampire world Janette has moved on. Nick's new partner, Tracey Vetter, a rather annoyingly perky young woman has stumbled upon the existence of vampires, a secret that she is intent on keeping from Nick. As the season progresses the stories do improve, particularly those involving Tracey and Vachon, 'her' vampire. The stories are interesting and well done for the most part.
The final episode is compelling but will certainly cause fans of the series to scream 'no' and frantically search for a loophole.
The downside to this set, besides being the final episodes, is the lack of extras. Commentaries by actors, writers, series creators etc. would have been greatly appreciated and are conspicously absent. An... Read more

I was a huge fan of FOREVER KNIGHT and was sad and very disappointed to see it end. I'm glad that it's now on DVD, but I still have one major problem. The first two seasons are being sold here for about fifteen dollars a piece. The finally season, as I'm sure others have noted, is over one hundred! What's up with this? Perhaps there is some bonus material that makes it worth the high price that I'm not aware of? I love shopping at amazon. I generally get really good deals here, but until or unless the price is soon lowered for the last season of FOREVER KNIGHT, I won't be able to afford to buy it. Please amazon, help us out here!

I am not quite sure when this book was written but it was a while ago - I just hadn't read it yet.This mystery has a certain eerie quality to it which I am not usually fond of but, because Rankin is a master of weaving stories, was very enjoyable.The beginning of the book has us meet a university student who is worried because his girlfriend has gone missing.We immediately think the worst, because this is a murder mystery, but there is no body.Detective Inspector John Rebus has the case and members of the girl's family and her boyfriend's family immediately try to bully our John.He isn't having any of it and succeeds in annoying the higher ups at work as well as many people who seem involved in this girl's life.At first, of course, everyone paints a delightful picture of her but as the time wears on a little more information is given and Rebus and his team begin to see a different story behind the 'perfect' daughter and friend.Meanwhile it seems as though Rebus has a little romance in his life.A curator at the museum returns an interest in him and he is finally going out with someone other than his murder team.She proves helpful to the case as well because there are items in her museum which show up in places that seem to make no sense to anyone.The Falls comes to play as a miniature coffin is found by them and the lady who calls in the story is only too happy to share her information with not only the police but also the local reporter.She becomes a definite burden for the force as they are trying to keep some information quiet about the details of the disappearance and amazingly the press themselves seem to be getting hold of pertinent details.The actual area known as the Falls is interesting too as it is really only slightly faster moving water with some elevation drops and hardly what one would call a fall but it has been known as the falls for as long as anyone can remember and just so happens to be very near to where the missing girl grew up.Here is where the plot thickens, literally.The girl's mother seems remote and suspicious, her father bombastic and overly dependent upon a friend as opposed to his wife and a little background history which would give more than one person a great motive to want to punish their family.Typical Rankin right!This is excellent stuff and a story that is guaranteed to confound you.I thought I had it figured out several times only to be surprised yet again.
