Is More Gun Control the Answer to Mass Shootings?
William S.Burroughs once said, "After a shooting spree, they always want to take the guns away from the people who didn't do it.I sure as hell wouldn't want to live in a society where the only people allowed guns are the police and the military.".Is more gun control really the answer to mass shootings?I believe that more gun control is NEVER the answer. It only makes law-abiding citizens more vulnerable to criminals and maniacs like the Aurora, Colorado shooter.During a recent conversation about the Colorado massacre someone told me that because the shooter had purchased four guns in the last six months should have sent up some red flags to authorities. Why should there have been a red flag raised because a guy bought four (perfectly legal) guns in six months? I've bought several guns and plenty of ammunition in the past six months and I don't want to go out and kill anyone.I like guns and shooting is a fun sport to participate in.The truth is that there has only been five mass shootings in the U.S.Since 1999 (including Columbine and Virginia Tech).Millions of people own guns in the United States and compared to that very few violent crimes are actually committed with firearms.More people actually commit suicide each year than are killed with guns.Does Legal Concealed Carry Really Make a Difference?Legal concealed carry does make a difference and it has proven to save lives many times.Responsible gun owners don't fire wildly into crowds like maniacs do.Many lives have been saved as a result of responsible people carrying firearms legally. Those so-called "safer societies" in other countries that have stricter gun control laws also have less freedom than Americans do.Why do you think that everyone wants to come to America? It's because of the freedoms we have and the Second Amendment to the Constitution of the United States ensures that we will continue to have those freedoms.Studies show that states that allow for concealed carry have less violent crime than states that don't.Washington DC, the state of California, New York City and Chicago Illinois all enforce the strictest control laws in the U.S.And all of them have the highest violent crime and murder rates in the country. The UK has banned private ownership of guns for more than 20 yrs.And their violent crime rates involving knives and blunt instruments have skyrocketed.People are going to kill people no matter what. The fact is that an armed citizenry is a free citizenry.Isn't it ironic that all of the mass shootings in the U.S.Usually happen in places where firearms are prohibited like; Universities, elementary and high schools, banks, churches, movie theatres, and gun-free zones.Cowards always prey on the innocent where they are most vulnerable.A good friend and I went to see a movie a few weeks ago and both of us were legally armed and carrying our guns concealed.I know that if something similar to the Aurora, Colorado shooting had happened to us that we would have taken the appropriate action to defend ourselves and protect the lives of the other people around us.I'm a former U.S.Marine, Infantry Rifleman.I'm an expert marksman and I'm a trained expert with a great number of firearms so I know what I'm talking about. My friend has no military or police training and I would trust him with my life because of his knowledge of firearms and of his character. If guns kill people then spoons make people fat and pencils make people misspell words.People kill people.Period! It's been that way since the beginning of time and it started with Cain and Able. The problem is the brokenness of the human condition and our fallen, sinful nature. No amount of legislation is going to change that.
