Are you getting bored or frustrated by your efforts at the horse track? Is horseracing getting boring and old hat? Maybe your horse racing handicapping could use a boost and you need more information about picking winners. Here is a little exercise that might open your eyes to some possibilities to pick more winners and have a little fun playing a game.We call it the Horseracing Detective.Your job, as the horse racing detective, is to observe the horses, jockeys, and trainers, and to find clues to which one is likely to win, without using the past performances. The only thing you can do is to check the equipment the horse used in its last races, for instance, tongue ties, wraps, Cornell Collars, etc.Instead of burying your nose in the program, past performances, speed sheets, etc.Spend some time at rail side or the paddock and watch the horses.Watch them being saddled, watch them in the post parade, and make notes. What kind of notes? Well first of all, make notes about the horses equipment, for instance, is it wearing front wraps today and did it last time it ran? Is it wearing a tongue tie? That is a very big equipment change.Watch the jockey and trainer as well and from their body language, or if you can read lips, find out what is going on with them.Did the trainer just tell her jockey to just go easy on him today because he isn't 100%? Maybe she said don't push him until the 1/8th pole.Did you catch that? Does that jockey look confident, or is he or she just slouching and apparently bored by the proceedings? Is someone who thinks he or she is on the next winner likely to be yawning and distracted in the post parade? Is the horse on its toes or just plodding along? There are so many things going on right under your nose that I could write a book about them, but that would take too much time and, like you, I like to spend my days going over a program and watching races. After you've made your notes, and after each race, write down the results and see if any of your notes pointed out a winner. You may be surprised to find that there was a winner right under your nose, and everyone else's and the clues were staring everyone in the face. You may also find some favorites who were beaten and gave clues that they would run poorly while in the paddock or post parade. The point I am making is that a horse race is a live event and takes place in the present.Past performances can only show you so much and the rest of the information is right in front of you, but the only way you'll see it and get the message is to be a horse racing detective at the race track.
