Book Review of The Narrows by Michael Connelly


Harry Bosch is now dividing his time between Los Angeles and Las Vegas.He is renting a small apartment in Vegas to be near his daughter Maddie.His former wife lives there and he is building his relationship with his child who needs him.Things between Harry and Eleanor Wish are not very good since their divorce.He doesn't want to lose the quality time with his young daughter.Back in LA, Harry had recently visited Terry McCaleb's widow, Graciela.She had hired him to look into the death of her husband.Terry was a former FBI Agent and had worked on a few cases with Harry when he was with the LAPD.Now, he is doing private detective work.Graciela believed her husband's death may not have been an accident as reported.She wanted Harry to do his magic and relieve her mind concerning how he died.Terry had recently died of a heart attack while on a fishing trip.He had previously received a heart transplant years before.Graciela McCaleb believes the heart attack was caused by someone tampering with his medication.Harry starts by checking some of the old cases McCaleb had on his boat.Terry used to look over his past open detective cases in his spare time while on the boat.One such case had to do with the Poet case.Meanwhile FBI agent Rachel Walling gets the call to join an FBI case where they were excavating bodies in the California desert.Years earlier she had worked on the Poet case.Rachel had always remembered the case.She was the last to see the poet.She had shot him but he had survived.This FBI dig in the desert was thought to be the work of Robert Backus, known as the poet.Terry McCaleb's ties to the investigation of the Poet made Bosch take a closer look.Terry had drawn a map that seemed to show where he thought the Poet was now located.He had mathematically figured out distances between cities and what routes he used to dispose of his bodies.This information brought Bosch's trace to the desert.The Feds were there too.Bosch joins forces with Rachel; they had known each other before.Now the two are questioning how the investigation is going.Rachel Walling gets a call from a former co-worker at Quantico that says there is a package there for her.It had a GPS tag with a mark that pointed to the Mojave Desert.A fingerprint found on its battery belonged to the Poet.Robert Backus was known as the poet because he liked the poetry of Edgar Alan Poe.He is a serial killer with at least 14 murders to his name.Rachel knew that he remembered her too.It turns out that he wanted her to be part of the current investigation.He got his wish.Bosch and Walling are driven on a few twists and turns in pursuit of the killer.He fools them and sets up a few scenes to throw them off.At the end of the story, both detectives make mistakes but end up victorious.Justice is finally served with a few surprises.Another excellent mystery that keeps you tuned in.
