4.0 out of 5 stars Good, Solid Crime Fiction, January 14, 2008
Stuart Pawson had a career as a mining engineer He followed this with a spell working for the probation service, before he became a full-time writer. He lives in the pleasant waterside village of Fairburn in Yorkshire. The author's writing is gritty and to the point, added to which he has a likeable sense of humour that he usually incorporates into his books, all of which I have found enjoyable.

Hartley Goodrich is a financial adviser, well to be absolutely correct a late financial adviser. An irritatingly safe and secure job, as jobs go, or so you would think. However when he is found dead in his armchair and right beside him is the flower pot that caused the fatal blow to his head there is no shortage of suspects. Why? Well when his affairs are looked into, it becomes apparent that his financial advice has cost some of his clients a great deal of money. In fact enough money to ensure that they are on a list of suspects, for his murder. Could it really be as simple as... Read more

If you enjoy British mysteries in which the setting seeps into the plot, you'll appreciate this modern Yorkshire mystery which is full of local color and crime. Described as Yorshire's answer to Inspector Morse, Detective Inspector Charlie Priest is much less curmudgeonly and more humorous than Morse. I'd date either of them.

This is one of Charlie's less dark mysteries. No crimes involving children or small animals--well, a few animals make appearances but most thrive. In this latest Charlie Priest detective novel, a financial adviser has died a suspicious death. Did he flub up someone's taxes or does more lie beneath the surface than accounting errors? Charlie investigates the worlds of diamonds, drugs and hidden gold--a heady mix that leads Charlie on a trail with many detours populated by nefarious characters and suspicious situations which offer Charlie fodder for his quips and witty observations. If you're in the mood for an entertaining escape and amusing whodunit,... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars You Can't Miss with DI Charlie Priest, July 6, 2009
It's good to see Stuart Pawson found his calling after being involved in other careers. Here's a very good suspense novel peppered with the grittiness & tongue in cheek Brit humor of DI Charlie Priest.
Seemingly a murder takes place which could have been committed by any number of disenchanted suspects. That lays the groundwork for another theft of a massive amount of gold years prior.
Well written & intricate the story unfolds from beginning to end very nicely. Throw in the typical dry Brit humor along with Charlie's personal & professional life & Mr. Pawson has another winner.
I've read a few Charlie Priest novels & they've not disappointed
